Description

A choice plant for dryish borders, Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica rises with commanding spires that bring height and pollinator activity to sunny borders. Large rosettes of softly textured, grey-green leaves form a handsome base, releasing a distinctive herbal fragrance when brushed. In its flowering season, tall branching stems carry striking spikes of pale pink and white flowers that catch the light creating a shimmering effect. The overall look is bold yet naturalistic, making it ideal for gravel gardens, prairie-style planting or Mediterranean borders where its upright form adds structure among grasses and mound forming perennials. Bees and butterflies are irresistibly drawn to the nectar-rich blooms, while the dramatic flower spikes also make excellent additions to cut arrangements. A short-lived perennial or biennial, it often self-seeds, allowing this distinctive sage to reappear and weave through the planting year after year.Ultimate height: 1m (3.2ft). Ultimate spread: 50cm (20in).
