Description

Galanthus ikariae, often regarded as one of the most elegant snowdrop varieties, boasts striking leaves and large, beautifully marked flowers. Native to the Aegean Islands of Greece, it was first discovered on the island of Ikaria in 1893, where it thrives in damp, shady environments like river gorges, streambanks, and deciduous woodlands. This snowdrop remains a prized collector?s variety and is rarely found in gardens. It requires a bit more attention than other snowdrops, being slightly less hardy, but if planted in a sheltered, shaded spot with moist, well-draining soil, it will self-seed and gradually form impressive colonies. Galanthus ikariae features broad, dark green foliage, creating a distinct mat-like appearance. Its large flowers showcase a striking green mark that spans more than half of the inner petals. As one of the last snowdrops to bloom, it offers a graceful conclusion to the snowdrop season. Height: 15cm (6in). Spread: 10cm (4in).
