Baofeng Lake – A Hidden Gem in Zhangjiajie Baofeng Lake (宝峰湖), located within the Wulingyuan Scenic Area near Zhangjiajie city in Hunan Province, is a uniquely beautiful waterscape that contrasts with the towering mountain peaks the region is best known for. What makes it especially interesting is that it was created by accident: in the 1970s, local people built a dam to store water for irrigation, and the reservoir that formed became a stunning high-mountain lake surrounded by lush forests and dramatic stone peaks. The lake stretches about 2.5 km long with a depth around 72 meters, and its water is extraordinarily clear and emerald green, fed by rainfall, underground springs, and mountain runoff. Sail across the calm water and it often resembles a “jade mirror” reflecting the surrounding sandstone pillars and trees, giving the landscape a dreamlike, almost fairytale quality.
